ROTTERDAM – Water Management
Over 30% of the Netherlands lies below sea level. The Dutch have reclaimed this land. Flood disasters from sea and river water has caused many victims particularly during the 1953 floods where 1850 people were drowned. The struggle against the water is ongoing which is evident with many dikes, dams and walls with plenty of the land being reclaimed from as early as the 14th century.

Maeslant-Barrier

The Maeslant Barrier – Storm surge barrier

The storm surge barrier on the Nieuwe Waterweg at the Hoek of Holland, together with the Hartel barrier, constitutes the final elements of the Delta works to protect the Netherlands against the sea. Consisting of 2 barrier ‘gates’ the structure protects over 1 million people in and around Rotterdam.
