Madrid is Spain's central capital. A city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. It’s renowned for its European art, including the Prado Museum’s works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters as well as Flemish artists like Ruben and Rembrandt. The heart of old Hapsburg Madrid is the portico-lined Plaza Mayor, and nearby is the baroque Royal Palace and Armory, displaying the personal arms of the Kings of Spain and historic weaponry.

The Royal Palace of Madrid

The Palace is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family but it is only used for state ceremonies. It is the largest royal palace in Europe (135 000 square metres). It’s interior is notable for it’s wealth of art and the use of many fine materials in the constructions and decoration of the rooms. Besides it’s art collection, other collections of great historical importance include Porcelain, Watches, Furniture, Silverware and the world’s only complete Stradivarius string quintet.

Plaza de Cibeles

The Plaza symbolises Madrid with such notable attractions as the Cibeles Fountain, the Cybele Palace, the Bank of Spain, the Linares Palace and the Buenavista Palace. The Cybele Palace dominates the plaza and is also know as Palacio de Comunicationes (Palace of Communication). The Cibeles Fountain was designed by Spanish architect Ventura Rodriguez under the reign of Charles III and depicts the Roman goddess of fertility. It’s Madrid’s most iconic landmark and a symbol of Spanish football.
