These walks, which are guided throughout, allow students to tread in the footsteps of the heroes of the First World War.

Soldiers of the Somme
Soldiers, The Somme

The first day of the Somme battle – July 1, 1916 – saw almost 60,000 casualties in one morning, with 20,000 of them dead.

Why did it happen?

We study the fate of the Pals battalions, the Empire troops, the old Regulars of the British Army and Kitchener’s keen young volunteers. We finish at the great Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme Battle, designed by Lutyens.

These tours can either be for three or four days and the format involves one walk on the first and last day, with two walks on the other days. The walking will mainly be on paths and tracks and each walk will be between two and three miles.

Students must have rain cover clothing and suitable walking footwear. If the weather is particularly bad, the programme can be adjusted to some extent.

All tours can be tailor-made to suit your needs. Some groups have specific sites that they wish to visit including graves, where they may wish to lay a wreath. Others like to combine a history tour with some leisure time, such as a day visit to Bruges, a visit to Bellewaerde Theme Park outside Ypres or add on a visit to Disneyland® Paris.

All our tours include:

  • Pick-up and drop-off at your school or chosen pick-up point
  • Executive class coach travel (subject to availability)
  • Return travel on Eurotunnel (or P&O Ferries, if you prefer)
  • Entrance to all museums throughout the tour
  • Full board accommodation for tours lasting two days or more
  • Exclusive Teachers’ Information Booklet and Pupil Worksheets
  • Personal Battlefields Tours Executive to assist with tour planning
